The Importance of Dental Check-ups

A Happy Dental Client in Hood River, ORDr. Burton will be the first person to tell you that a strong at-home oral hygiene routine is the most important factor that contributes to your oral health. Coming in a close second to at home oral care is making certain to come in to our office at least twice a year for normal cleanings and examinations. During these regular check-ups we have a chance to see the state of your teeth and gums and alert you to any issues or changes in your mouth that you should know about.

Cleanings

The goal of every professional dental cleaning that we do is to give you a clean slate. Every six months, you get to come in and have your teeth fastidiously cared for by our team of top-notch dental professionals.

The main focus of cleanings is to remove tartar and plaque the has built up over the last six months. Many people ask us exactly what plaque is. After a long day, before you are about to brush your teeth for the evening sometimes your teeth will feel as though they have a coating over them. The coating is often described as “mossy” or “sticky” to the touch. This is the substance known as plaque. It is a sticky film of bacteria that proliferates within your mouth.

If left to build up, either by neglect, or just because it is located in a place that brushing and flossing has difficulty reaching, plaque can harden. Once plaque has been allowed to harden it is referred to as tartar. Tartar can wreak havoc on the health of your teeth and gums. If tartar is allowed to thrive it can lead to tooth loss, and gum disease.

During your regular cleanings we find and remove plaque and tartar and make you aware of any spots that may require your ongoing attention.

Dental Examinations

After your cleaning we will have the chance to see the true condition of your teeth and gums. We will X-ray your mouth. X-rays are a fantastic tool that allow us to see what we otherwise could not due to issues being hidden between teeth or because they are too small to detect with the naked eye. We will review your X-rays with you if there are any issues you ought to be made aware of.

Dr. Burton will perform a physical examination of your mouth for cavities using a special pick that he will lightly run over the surface of your teeth. He will also check for issues with your bite such as teeth not aligning, or cracks and chips that may have an effect on your health down the road.

When cracks, fractures, or chips are found in certain patterns Dr. Burton will be able to determine the cause of the issue. Such anomalies are often caused by clenching, or grinding, either during the day, or unconsciously during the night. In the case of nocturnal grinding or clenching we can fit you for a night guard that will prevent wear and tear to your teeth.
