Scaling and Root Planing

A woman receiving Scaling and Root Planing in Hood River, ORProfessional cleanings are an excellent way to keep your teeth and gums free of decay and disease. When a patient develops gum disease, we may recommend a “deep” cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective ways to treat and eliminate gum disease. If you have the symptoms of gum disease, our specialists at Bruce Burton, DMD, can improve your oral health and prevent future complications.

Why We Recommend Scaling and Root Planing

Gum disease, caused by the bacteria in plaque and tartar, is an inflammation of the tissues that support your teeth. During the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily. This stage of gum disease is reversible and very treatable. If the disease progresses to periodontitis, the infection can cause significant damage to the supportive bone, and connective tissues and ligaments. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Healthy gum tissue should fit snugly around the tooth. Each tooth has a periodontal pocket that should only be 1 to 3 millimeters in depth. Gum disease can cause these pockets to increase in depth, which in turn, can trap more food debris and bacteria. A scaling and root planing procedure is performed when the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, or the roots have tartar on them.

Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

During the procedure, we will “scale” the surfaces of your teeth using a hand or ultrasonic scaler. This involves the removal of plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth and root surfaces. Once the tooth is completely scaled, we will plane the root to smooth out all the rough areas. Root planing keeps the bacteria, plaque, and tartar from re-establishing itself below the gumline. This also allows your gums to properly heal and reattach to the tooth.

Before your procedure, we may administer a local anesthetic to eliminate discomfort and pain. You may experience some minor pain or discomfort for a day or two after the deep cleaning. Your gums may also be inflamed and tender. To prevent further infection, we may prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash. At a follow-up appointment, [[[CLIENTEX:DOCNAME1]]] will check to see if your gums are healing properly. If the procedure was a success, your gums would be firmly reattached and pink. If not, we may recommend another form of treatment, such as surgical intervention.

Periodontal Maintenance

The most important thing you can do after a scaling and root planing is periodontal maintenance. Once you develop gum disease, chances of developing it again increase significantly. We recommend a good home care routine with daily brushing and flossing, especially after meals. Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste and replace your toothbrush once the bristles are worn. Regular checkups, professional cleanings, and periodontal examinations are also an important part of keeping your mouth healthy after a scaling and root planing.
